Seoul is where the money went this week. Kukje Gallery placed a 1971 Yoo Youngkuk for ₩2.2–2.5 billion ($1.6–1.85 million), the highest price recorded for a Korean artist at Frieze Seoul since the fair launched in 2022, while 178 museums and institutions from 25 countries worked the aisles — a record for the fair, and a better indicator of where the Asian market is heading than any single receipt. In New York, Christie's is stacking November with estates: a $60 million single-owner sale led by the scarce-to-market neo-Impressionist Paul Signac, and eight paintings from the late record producer Clive Davis, among them Warhol's portrait of Aretha Franklin. And the art world is mourning the painter Lucien Smith, dead at thirty-seven.
Kukje's $1.6–1.85 million Yoo Youngkuk sale is the highest price for a Korean artist in Frieze Seoul's four editions, set against a record 178 visiting museums and institutions.
