One of the defining collections of postwar art is coming apart for sale. Christie's will disperse the Antonio Homem Sonnabend Collection across Evening Sales in London, Paris and New York this fall, with an estimate above $50 million and works by Warhol, Johns, Rauschenberg, Lichtenstein and Koons — material assembled by the dealers who built the market for it in the first place. At the opposite end of the price scale, a Gertrude Abercrombie canvas bought for $30 at an estate sale, authenticated off an archival photo found in a Milwaukee Art Museum catalog, carries a $150,000–$250,000 estimate at Freeman's. And a $6.7 million lawsuit over fake Warhols running through Florida, Peru and Philadelphia is a reminder that the provenance you don't check is the one that costs you.
Christie's will offer more than $50M of the Antonio Homem Sonnabend Collection across London, Paris and New York this fall, while a $30 estate-sale Gertrude Abercrombie carries a $150,000–$250,000 estimate at Freeman's.
