Christie's has decided that memorabilia is no longer a sideline. The house confirmed Wednesday it is launching a dedicated global Pop Culture division under former Heritage executive Josh Benesh, days after closing out the Jim Irsay collection at $105.3 million across five sales — 404 lots, 28 records, and a David Gilmour Stratocaster at $14.5 million, the most ever paid for a guitar. Elsewhere, the Met announced the first major Felix Gonzalez-Torres show in New York in over 30 years, timed with the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Getty picked up a newly attributed Velázquez — its first — in a reminder that Old Masters value still gets made in the archive as much as the saleroom.
