Washington and New York are handing out career-defining surveys this season. The National Gallery of Art has given Glenn Ligon a major survey, and MoMA and MoMA PS1 are jointly presenting Teresa Margolles's first large-scale US museum exhibition, thirty years of work about violence and loss in Mexico. In London, Christie's will offer David Hockney's Dog Painting 17 on 14 October, the first painting from his 1995 series of his dachshunds ever to come to auction. Hockney, who spent six decades painting swimming pools, Yorkshire hills and the people and animals closest to him, died in June at 88, and only six of the dog paintings remain in private hands. Pace, after cutting more than 50 artists in June, is looking for a tenant to take over part of its Chelsea headquarters.

Tier-1 surveys for Glenn Ligon at the National Gallery of Art and Teresa Margolles at MoMA and MoMA PS1 lead the day, while Pace looks to sublease part of its Chelsea headquarters.

Christie's London offers Hockney's Dog Painting 17 (1995), the first work from his Dog Series to reach auction, on 14 October during Frieze Week at £1.5–2.5M ($1.99–3.3M). The late painter, who made his name with pictures of Los Angeles pools and English landscapes, painted the series of his own dachshunds. Six paintings from it remain in private hands and the David Hockney Foundation holds the rest.

The first public price for a series that is almost entirely held by the foundation. The result will show how bidders value it, but a single lot is a thin basis for judging his wider painting market.

Glenn Ligon lands a major survey at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, a national-museum platform for the painter known for his stenciled text works and neons.

A national museum survey strengthens the case for existing holdings. Opening dates, the catalogue and the lenders list will say more about which bodies of work get the most attention.

Teresa Margolles's first large-scale US museum exhibition, 'En el lugar de los hechos (At the Scene),' opens across MoMA and MoMA PS1, surveying more than 30 years of work.

A two-venue MoMA presentation is significant recognition in the US. Much of her work is installation and performance, so the private market is thin, and it is worth checking which photographs and objects actually circulate before drawing price conclusions.

German painter Sabine Moritz opens her debut exhibition with Galerie Max Hetzler, showing gestural color fields with emerging figures.

A multi-city blue-chip gallery adds reach and resale support. How Hetzler prices the new work against her earlier market is the next thing to look at.

Tokyo-based painter Sasaki Ken gets a career-spanning presentation of 60 paintings spread across multiple galleries at the 2026 Gwangju Biennale.

Unusual depth of exposure at a major biennial for a lesser-known painter. Worth tracking whether gallery representation or museum interest outside Japan follows.
