A New York judge has barred Chicago dealer Kavi Gupta from selling or marketing roughly 150 artworks tied to a $2.05 million financing deal with Longcraft LLC, which alleges withheld proceeds, misrepresented inventory and missing works. It is the latest dispute in a run that includes Jeffrey Gibson's 2023 suit over nearly $640,000 in sales proceeds. Financial distress is also bringing works to market at the top end: pieces from bankrupt hedge funder George Allen Weiss's collection, including Bacon, Cézanne, Picasso and Warhol, go to Sotheby's November marquee sales, with Sotheby's guaranteeing minimum prices on six lots. Elsewhere, the Musée d'Orsay opens its Mary Cassatt centennial show on October 6, and SFMOMA will hang about 150 works from BTS star RM's collection, with Korean modernists prominent among them.
Financial distress is driving the day's biggest stories: a New York court has frozen sales of about 150 works at Chicago's Kavi Gupta gallery, and George Allen Weiss's bankruptcy is sending his Bacon, Cézanne and Picasso holdings to Sotheby's in November.
