Denzil Forrester, who has spent four decades painting the packed dancehalls and clubs of British nightlife, has joined Thaddaeus Ropac at 70, and the gallery will show two of his works at Frieze London this month. In New York, Jeff Koons is sending nine works from his own collection, valued at a collective $100 million, to Christie's on November 17. They are led by Picasso's Le Baiser (1969), estimated at $40 million, against the $17.4 million Koons paid in 2008. Sotheby's answers with the Blaquier family's $450 million Impressionist collection. The reported motive behind the Koons consignment is funding his costly studio, at a time when his own auction prices have softened since the 2019 Rabbit record, and that adds a second story to the sale.

Thaddaeus Ropac takes on Denzil Forrester at 70, while Christie's and Sotheby's line up roughly $550M of single-owner collections, from Jeff Koons and the Blaquier family, for the November sales in New York.

Denzil Forrester joins Thaddaeus Ropac at 70, with two works headed to Frieze London

A mega-gallery taking on a veteran painter usually brings wider placement and a primary price reset over the following seasons, and the Frieze presentation is the first look at how Ropac intends to position him.

Picasso's Le Baiser (1969), from the Koons collection, carries a $40M estimate at Christie's November sale after a $17.4M purchase in 2008

At the estimate, the gain works out to about 48% in real terms over 18 years, roughly 2% a year after inflation, which is a sober benchmark for late Picasso. That is an estimate, and the hammer price on November 17 is the number that will count.

Koons and Blaquier collections bring an estimated $550M of trophy material to the November New York sales

Two large single-owner sales in the same weeks will test how much top-end Modern and Impressionist material buyers can absorb at once; results against estimates will say more than the headline totals.
