The restitution premium is now a pricing mechanism. Christie's will offer Kandinsky's Das bunte Leben (1907) in London on October 14 during Frieze week with an estimate above $30 million — the same category of work, restituted after a six-year legal fight, that set the artist's $44.9 million record at Sotheby's in 2023. Elsewhere the day runs to institutional stress: a Hamburg court fined two children of dealer Serop Simonian and confiscated $37 million tied to looted Egyptian antiquities, the State Department is preparing to sell a Kehinde Wiley painting pulled from the US Embassy in Santo Domingo, and John Galliano withdrew his Costume Institute show ahead of the 2027 Met Gala. Provenance has never been more valuable at the top, or more dangerous in the middle.
Christie's brings the restituted Kandinsky Das bunte Leben to London on October 14 at $30M-plus, two years after another restituted Kandinsky made $44.9M at Sotheby's.
